An Efficient Tool for the Evaluation of the Impact of WiFi Interference on Bluetooth Performance

IEEE.802.15.1 (Bluetooth) wireless personal area networks and IEEE.802.11b/g (WiFi) wireless local area networks share the same 2.4 GHz unlicensed ISM (Industrial, Scientific and Medical) frequency band. Without any provisions, mutual interference between these two wireless systems may result in performance degradation when devices are co-located in the same environment. In this paper, the Bluetooth and WiFi coexistence issue is addressed. A fast simulation tool that models the PHY and the MAC layers elements of both Bluetooth and WiFi was developed, validated by measurements and used to model interference scenarios.
